Key Data on Education 2009

This seventh edition of Key Data on Education in Europe from the Eurydice Network combines statistical data and qualitative information to describe the organisation and functioning of the education systems of 31 European countries. Based on data collected through the national units of the Eurydice network, Eurostat, and the PISA/PIRLS international education surveys, it provides an insight into how European countries address common challenges in education.

The 121 indicators in the publication provide an overall picture of the education systems and policies in place across Europe, from pre-primary to higher education level. They also address horizontal issues such as demographic trends, financing of education systems, teacher status and training, school autonomy and quality assurance. When appropriate, comparison is provided with the previous edition (published 2005) to show trends in the fast-changing European education landscape.

Education in Europe — Key statistics 2007 - Issue number 37/2009

More than 100 millions of pupils and students are in the European education system, roughly 4 millions of graduates in tertiary education and about 60% are females, more than 88 out 100 4-years-olds are enrolled in pre-primary or in primary education and 15 pupils per teacher in primary education. This is a brief selection of the available key statistics on education coming from the yearly joint UOE (Unesco Institute for Statistics, OECD and Eurostat) data collection. The disseminated data cover the 27 EU Member States, the candidate and the EFTA/EEA countries and United States and Japan. The time period of reference for the calendar year 2007 for graduates and the school/academic year 2006/07 for other data.

Indicators on education expenditure – 2006 - Issue number 36/2009

In the European Union, higher public expenditure on education as percentage of GDP is reflected in more resources for the students in terms of expenditure per student. In 2006 in the EU, expenditure per student in educational institutions varied between 2 139 EUR PPS in Bulgaria and 8 583 EUR PPS in Austria. Staff represented 78 % of public educational institutions current expenditure in 2006. Current expenditure accounted for 91 % of the total, while capital expenditure represented 9 %. Public expenditure on education ranged from 3.8 % to 7.9 % of the GDP and private funds represented 13 % of the income of educational institutions. This data in focus releases the latest indicators on education expenditure for 2006. These figures are based on the UOE joint data collection by UNESCO Institute of Statistics, OECD and Eurostat.
