Universities need to transform in various ways if they are to respond effectively to the socio-economic and technological demands of today's world, according to internationally respected scholar Manuel Castells. But despite the many challenges and opportunities facing universities, many "continue to be corporatist and bureaucratic", rigid in their functioning and primarily concerned with defending their own and professors' interests.

He has been an adviser to the presidents of 11 countries, is a professor of sociology at the Open University of Catalonia in Barcelona, and an emeritus professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught for 24 years. He is also a professor of communication at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, a distinguished professor of technology and society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a visiting professor of internet studies at Oxford.
